Graduate Programs Introduction
Assistant Dean, Shaun Carver asks you to consider your role as a member of the Rady community and outlines student expectations. Three main points are covered: the growth mindset - start being the person you want to become next year today, academic rigor - you came here to be challenged and we will challenge you, and career goals - put in the work every day and stay engaged. Career Connections Director, Terra Saltzman-Baker joins Shaun to reiterate the importance of starting early and staying focused on your career goals. Excel Workshop

Whether Excel is a daily part of your business or just occasionally used for a quick spreadsheet project, users often find themselves spending hours trying to answer the question, “I know there’s a way to do this in Excel, but how?” Become a more efficient Excel user and learn the most powerful features that the program has to offer in this one-day, advanced course. Highly interactive and hands-on, you will spend the entire time using Excel while an expert trainer walks you through demonstrations and exercises.

Required Materials

Laptop (preferably a PC)

Topics Covered:

Pivot Tables: allows you to extract the significance from a large, detailed data set.  We will look at many examples and covers special features of Pivot Tables, including:  Slicers, Linking Pivot Tables, Report Layouts, Grouping, Calculated Fields, Drill Down, Grand Totals, Conditional Formatting, Filtered Records, and more.

Pivot Charts: the visual representation of a pivot table.  We will look at dynamic Pivot Charts, too.

Macros: create automated tasks and custom logic

Macro Writing: useful for applying style and formatting, manipulating data and text, communicating with data sources and creating entirely new documents.  We will cover If/Then and Do Loops.

VBA: Visual Basic for Applications is the programming language used to develop macros

Advanced Lookup Functions: allows you to search a column of data for a specific value within Excel to return the corresponding value within another row.  We will discuss constraints of certain lookup functions and ways to fix those issues.  We will also cover errors and how to use them to our advantage.

Data Validation:  Make a list of the entries that restricts the values allowed in a cell.

Creating Amortization Tables: shows the interest applied to a fixed interest loan and how the principal is reduced by payments. It also shows the detailed schedule of all payments so you can see how much is going toward principal & how much is being paid toward interest charges.  We will also discuss how to pay off your mortgage early and the results of various scenarios.

Name Definitions: use defined names in lieu of traditional row-and-column addresses to create formulas more quickly and easily, while simultaneously creating documentation
